Saudia Planning Flights to Toronto this Fall

Sunday, August 18th, 2013

Saudia, the national airline of Saudi Arabia, will be launching flights from Toronto connecting to Jidda and Riyadh.  This will be of great benefit to Canadians who want to travel to the kingdom for the hajj and umrah pilgrimages in the coming years.  Currently, those flying to Saudi Arabia do so by flying to the Gulf states via the U.S. or Europe.  The flights will begin on October 28 and will operate on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

This year, hajj will be over by the time the new service is launched, but it will be available to those who want to do the umrah pilgrimage.  A major tour operator says there will be no change in the number of Canadians partaking in the hajj next year due to the new service.  Alaa El-Kholy of Falcon Travel, says this is because the Saudis have cut the global hajj quota by 20% due to a huge expansion going on in the city of Mecca.

Great Lakes Airlines Cutting Flights between Pierre and Minneapolis

Tuesday, August 13th, 2013

Great Lakes Airlines has been operating four daily flights between Pierre and Minneapolis, but they are now cutting that back to two flights per day.  According to Pierre airport manager Mike Isaacs, the change is not due to passenger numbers, but due to changes in the regulations for flying time for pilots.

City officials have reported that passenger numbers are actually up this year from the numbers in 2012.  Great Lakes Airlines also offers four flights per day to Denver and those flights will remain unchanged.

Fire Wreaks Havoc at Nairobi Airport in Kenya

Thursday, August 8th, 2013

On Wednesday, a huge fire ripped through the arrivals hall of the Nairobi International Airport, the main airport in Kenya and the largest airport in East Africa.  The airport was closed and all inbound flights were rerouted.  According to Michael Kamau, the cabinet secretary for transport and infrastructure, there were no injuries due to the incident.  Wednesday was the 15th anniversary for the U.S Embassy bombings in Nairobi, but there has been no indication that terrorism was involved in the blaze.

Kenya’s anti-terror police boss, Boniface Mwaniki, said he was waiting for the fire to be put out so that he could conduct an investigation into the matter.  Dark black smoke was visible at a distance and according to passengers at the airport it took much time for the under-resourced fire brigade to get the blaze under control.  The airport is working to restore normal operations and airlines are working to help stranded passengers.
