One-Third of Frankfurt Flights Affected by Strike

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Frankfurt Airport is the third busiest in Europe and it is about to see a disruption of one-third of its flights as a result of a strike that is set to take place tomorrow by the airport’s runway-area controllers.  Peter Schmitz, Chief Operations Officer of Fraport AG, the company that owns the airport, said they are working hard to ensure that two-thirds of the 650 flights tomorrow go off without a hitch.  He also said that the company might seek a court injunction in an effort to stop the strike from happening.

Matthias Maas, a spokesman for the Gewerkschaft der Flugsicherung (GdF) union, said that after talks broke down strike action was set and they will be off the job between 3:00 pm and 10:00 pm.  This airport is the hub of Lufthansa, Europe’s second largest airline.  There has been a mediator to assist with the negotiations and GdF has accepted their recommendations.  However, the airline is standing by their offer.

Amsterdam Flights Delayed Due to Bomb Threat

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam saw the delay of dozens of flights due to a bomb threat.  A man claimed to have a bomb and locked himself in a washroom.  This caused the evacuation of two terminals and once the authorities moved in and spoke with the man, it became clear that he had no explosives on him.  However, despite this and the speed of the evacuation of the terminals, it took much longer to re-open them and get the schedule back to normal.

Rob van Kapel, a spokesman for the military police, said that the suspect did not pose a threat, but according to security protocols the bomb squad searched the entire building.  A criminal investigation has been launched, but it is too early to say what charges the man will face or what his mental state might be in light of his action.

Heavy Snowfall in Europe Causes Major Delays for Flights to London

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

Hundreds of passengers were stranded in the Mumbai Airport yesterday when flights to London were halted due to bad weather.  A spokesperson from the Mumbai International Airport reported that departures from London had been rescheduled and that all arrivals were being delayed.  A spokesperson from Jet Airways said the airline has rescheduled one of its flights due to the advisory issued by the British Airports Authority.

In fact, the airport has asked all airlines to reduce the number of flights coming into Heathrow due to the amount of snow that is expected to fall.  One Air India flight was scheduled to depart Heathrow at 3:30 with 300 passengers, but was delayed until 11:30 as the flight crew was needed to operate a flight bound for Delhi that had been snowed in on the airfield the previous night.  Air India gives assurances that they are doing everything they can to operate flights during the bad weather.

Travel to Barcelona the Weekender Capital of Europe

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

Suddenly Barcelona has become the weekender capital of Europe. Visitors jet in on low-cost flights for the fun lifestyle, superb Mediterranean climate, and an unrivalled location that offers easy access to the delectable coves of the Costa Brava, scenic mountain trails of the Pyrȳnȳes, historic cities of Gerona and Tarragona, and wealth of Gothic and Romanesque monuments that fill the countryside.

Yet for all its outward changes the city remains at heart what it’s always been: practical, businesslike, proletarian, nonconformist, rebellious, artistic, and unabashedly hedonistic. It’s a heady, complex blend that has survived many a dark time and whose freewheeling Mediterranean spirit is epitomized in the bustling Rambla avenue, which runs all the way down to the port from Plaza Catalua along the source of a former riverbed. All this makes for a spirit as communal and sociable as the city’s traditional Sardana dance, in which no one leads and no one follows and everyone moves together in unison.

Travel to London to Visit the Historic & the Modern

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Would you like to purchase discount airfare to London this Spring?

The City of London, the city’s financial district (and home to St. Paul’s Cathedral, Fleet Street and the Tower of London), is a must for history lovers — it is where London began, as the original square mile built by the Romans, and it still exists as its own self-governing entity.

Once a venue for duels, executions and royal hunts — and a giant potato field during WWII — Hyde Park is now a manicured park filled with lounging sunseekers along the Serpentine Lido and joggers running a broad path through the English countryside.

As the gateway to the West End of London, Piccadilly Circus is where five of London’s busiest streets meet. During the day it’s a bustling area filled with tourists, shoppers and businesspeople. By night, it vibrates with life and a big party vibe. Joining the masses to shop, dine and sightsee.
