IndiGo Airlines to Increase Summer Flights

Sunday, March 4th, 2012

IndiGo Airlines, the budget carrier, announced on Friday that it has plans to increase its domestic and international flights during the summer months, made possible as it adds nine aircraft to its fleet by the end of the year.  Airline President, Aditya Ghosh, said that the airline is not interested in expanding its international operations just yet, but instead will focus on the increased summer operations.

IndiGo Airlines has been the only airline to report profits during the past few quarters and it is launching 12 new flights on its network in order to enhance their customers’ experience.  The airline currently operates 307 daily flights to 31 destinations and the expansion will bring the total number of aircraft in the fleet to 60.  The airline employs 5000 people and Ghosh says that they welcome any avenue for improvement in the industry as it will increase competition.

Jackson Hole Airport to Add New Flights to San Francisco and Houston

Sunday, March 4th, 2012

The Jackson Hole Airport, located in Jackson Wyoming, is set to add new non-stop flights to San Francisco and Houston this summer.  Flights to San Francisco will leave daily at 7:00 am and flights to Houston will depart every Saturday and Sunday at 8:00 am.  This brings the total of daily flight schedule for summer to 28 flights that will operate to and from nine US cities.

Airport Director Ray Bishop says that the additional flights are good news for the airport, but they will stretch security screening and airport parking space to their limits on Sundays.  He adds that they will come up with a parking space solution and they will require passengers to arrive extra early for Sunday flights so that they have time to get through security before their flight boards.

Flights from Phuket to Australia Might be Lost

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

Resort managers in Phuket are uncertain of the future of flights from Phuket to two of Australia’s biggest cities, Melbourne and Brisbane.  The future of these routes are in question since Air Australia halted all flights.  Before that happened there had been 100,000 tickets purchased for flights to Phuket, many of which were for passengers who were resort-bound.

One resort manager said that it isn’t just about the resort guests who have be stranded and have to find a way home, but also about those who have booked their trips well in advance.  They have lost their money and many cannot afford to pay for a new flight.  With thousands of tourists stranded in Phuket and Thailand, many others are now scared to book flights and are rethinking their travel plans.  Now resort managers are waiting to see if another airline will pick up the routes between Australia and Phuket.

Nasty Weather in Saskatchewan Disrupts Flights

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

A nasty Saskatchewan Screamer swooped into the region and the result was a disrupted flight schedule throughout much of the mid-west US yesterday.  Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport was the hardest hit where more than 350 flights were canceled due to the weather.  There were an additional 100 cancelations at Chicago Midway.  Southwest Airlines had many cancelations as the airline halted all flights into and out of the area between 6:00 and 9:00 pm on Thursday evening.

In addition to cancelations, many delays were a problem for travelers at O’Hare.  Flights were experiencing an average delay of 90 minutes.  Most airlines flying into Chicago and throughout the mid-west are allowing passengers to have flexibility in re-booking flights in light of the weather and the cancelations.  Snow and ice were the major problems in the region, although wind and low clouds also caused problems in the northeast.

Air Zimbabwe Suspends All Flights Indefinitely

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

Air Zimbabwe, the national carrier in Zimbabwe, has announced that it is suspending all flights indefinitely.  CEO for the airline, Innocent Mavhunga, has confirmed this.  The airline had hopes of getting their planes off the ground this week, but they have not been able to convince their pilots to return to work.  Their pilots walked off the job last week after not being paid their wages.

The airline says the situation is in the hands of the government now, which is the major shareholder in the airline.  They are waiting for the cabinet to intervene.  The airline has been struggling for years, with pilot strikes and increasing debt.  A debt of $1.2 million owed to a US spares company caused one of their planes to be impounded in London last year.  This prompted the airline to suspend flights to South Africa, to whom they owed a debt of $500,000.

Kingfisher Files New Flight Schedule

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

The struggling Kingfisher Airlines has filed a new flight schedule for the day, in response to demands from the aviation regulators.  The airline has canceled about 30 flights in major metropolitan areas today and has left hundreds of passengers stranded.  The cancelations and new scheduled were delivered with the annoucement to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) that the airline will be operating approximately 180 flights daily on 28 aircraft.

On Tuesday the airline was told by DGCA to submit a revised and realistic flight schedule within 24 hours.  Sources say the DGCA is now studying the new schedule.  The concern of the regulators is the large number of recent cancelations and whether or not the lack of funds is compromising the safety of passengers.  In addition, the cival aviation minister declined to comment on the move by the airline to seek financing from a consortium of 13 banks.
