Qantas Airways has decided against offering WiFi on their flights after they had a poor response in their latest trial of the service. The airline conducted an eight-month trial of the service, which they held on their Airbus A380 superjumbo aircraft on some flights between Los Angeles and London. Passengers were able to connect to the internet and email on their mobile devices, such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones.
The airline charged between $12 and $39 for the service and they had an average of 5% of passengers opting to use the service. They said that this was not sufficient to justify the cost of the technology required to offer the service. This decision goes against a pledge made by Qantas and Emirates that where there was a service gap between the two airlines they would both make a higher offering than the one they currently had on offer.
