Southern Vermont Regional Airport in Vermont has suspended flights for a week in order to perform upgrades to the airport’s landing instrument system.  Flight suspension began yesterday and will last through Friday while crews install a million-dollar instrument landing system.  The airport schedule includes three daily flights to Boston on Cape Air.  About 90 passengers were scheduled to fly this week and the airline is offering passengers a refund or the option of flying out of Lebanon, which is about 50 km away

The new landing system will allow pilots to shave 100 feet off their current requirement to see the runway from an altitude of 500 feet at a distance of half a mile away.  Dave Carman, Rutland airport manager, said it’s a small inconvenience for five days to gain a huge benefit for the airport and its customers.  Passenger demand has been on the rise and the airport plans to add a fourth flight to the Boston route in June.

Turkish Airlines, based in Istanbul, is looking to operate more flights to India.  They have approached the Indian aviation ministry to get approval for increasing the number of flights they can operate each week.  Under their current bilateral limits they are allowed no more than 14 passenger flights and 14 cargo flights to India per week.  They are operating this number of passenger flights, with seven flying out of Mumbai and seven flying out of Delhi, and now they want to extend their bilateral limits.

Adnan Aykac, general manager (northern and eastern India), Turkish Airlines, said that through their government they are currently trying to negotiate with the Indian aviation ministry for an increase in the limit.  He also stated that their current load factor for passenger flights is about 95% and there has been a 20% growth in the traffic from India.  The only down side to increasing flights out of the Indian airports is the recent hike in airport fees.

Seoul is set to offer direct flights from Gimpo Airport to Taipei International Airport.  The flights will begin on Monday and are the very first direct flights between the capital cities of Seoul and Taiwan.  Before the introduction of the new direct flight, travellers had to go to cities near the capitals.  The new route is a part of Taiwan’s flight network, which is continuing to expand and also includes non-stop service from Taipei to Shanghai’s Hongqiao Airport and Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.

Parts of eastern Canada are seeing a last blast of winter, with a storm system that moved into the region Monday.  From Ontario through to the Maritimes there were flight delays and cancellations that were the result of snow and freezing rain.  Toronto’s Pearson International Airport had more than 50 flights that were either delayed or cancelled.  Other cities affected include Ottawa, Montreal, and Halifax.

Heavy snowfall warnings were issued for southern Quebec and freezing rain warnings were issued for parts of New Brunswick.  Nova Scotia was to see heavy rainfall.  As warnings were issued and the bad weather moved in, Air Canada and Porter Airlines both warned passengers to expect flight delays and cancellations.  In fact, Porter issued a weather advisory for a number of cities, including Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, Moncton, Halifax, St. John’s, Newark, and Boston.

Dubai’s low-cost airline, Flydubai, has launched their inaugural flight to Sana’a, the capital of Yemen.  Flight FZ091 departed Dubai Terminal 2 at 7:00 am this morning and landed at El Rahaba Airport at 8:40 am.  With the new operations on this route of four times per week, Flydubai now has a network that includes 29 countries across the GCC, Middle East, Africa, Indian subcontinent, Asia, an parts of Europe.

A Statistics Canada report reveals that Canadians are paying higher prices for airfare.  Last year the average ticket price was $234.80 and at the same time this year the average price is $248.60.  These fees do not include GST or other taxes or fees.  The price increase is hitting those who travel within Canada.  Average prices for domestic flights rose from $179.10 in 2010 to $195.80 in 2011.  However, international flights actually decreased in average price, from  $319.40 in 2010 to $318.30 in 2011.

Jennifer Sanford, a spokesperson for WestJet, said that they increased their prices five times in 2011 due to the rising cost of fuel.  Peter Fitzpatrick, spokesperson for Air Canada, also said that the state of the economy and rising fuel costs were reasons for increases in their ticket prices.  The prices of tickets for domestic flights is also dependent the city from which people are flying.  Those flying from Toronto are going to be paying the highest prices at an average of $221.60.

The past three weeks has seen the suspension of Bahrain Air flights to Thiruvananthapuram international Airport due to issues over the air traffic rights on the Bahrain-Thiruvananthapuram-Bahrain sector.  Flights will resume on Friday because Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) gave mandatory clearance for the airline and they will offer flights on their regular schedule, with flights on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Bahrain Air’s summer schedule had begun on March 29, but flights to Thiruvananthapuram stopped on March 29 as civil aviation authorities would not give permission for the airline to operate on the new schedule.  Talks were held earlier in April between Civil Aviation Affairs Authority, Embassy of Bahrain in India, Indian Embassy, and the Bahrain Air authorities in New Delhi, but the airline held of on resuming flights until they had written clearance.
