Protests to Shrink Frankfurt Airport Continue as Court Date Comes Closer

Several thousand people take to the Frankfurt Airport every Monday in an effort to force the closure of the airport’s newest runway, opened last October, and to enforce a night ban on flights.  Christian Neunert, a retired architect, is going to protest for the first time at the age of 71.  He said the noise of the planes overhead is ruining his life.  The planes flying overhead is constant.  Every Monday the protestors have managed to force the closure of two of the airport’s check-in desks.

A federal court in Leipzig is due to rule on the night flight ban, which is making cargo flights difficult for the airport, after a hearing due to happen on March 13.  In contrast to the wishes of residents in the area, Fraport, the owner of Frankfurt Airport, wants to expand the airport further.  Ingrid Kopp, organiser of the Monday protests, said that there were few protestors when the new runway opened in October, but now there are far more because now people must put protective on their children for their walk to school.
