Travel to Greece – Railway Workers’ Strike Continues

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

Have you been looking for discount airfare to Greece?

Tourists were kept from entering the Acropolis of Athens on Wednesday as the Greek culture workers’ strike picks up speed. Athens’ most popular tourist site was closed, while the railway workers’ strike continued to disrupt train services.

It is not clear how long culture ministry workers, who are demanding permanent contracts instead of temporary ones, will keep up obstructing access to the Acropolis.

Traveling in Greece

Plan a vacation with discount airfare to Greece this fall.

Greece is, of course, the land of ancient sites and architectural treasures — the Acropolis in Athens, the amphitheater of Epidaurus, and the reconstructed palace at Knossos among the best known. But Greece is much more: It offers age-old spectacular natural sights, for instance — from Santorini’s caldera to the gray pinnacles of rock of the Meteora — and modern diversions ranging from elegant museums to luxury resorts.

Greek cuisine is undergoing its own renaissance at the hands of talented new chefs, making Athens a haven for foodies worldwide (three restaurants have already been awarded a prestigious Michelin star); museums were renovated and expanded while several new and exceptional smaller museums have also joined the already impressive lineup (the stunning new Acropolis museum will steal the show for many years to come and will hopefully see the return of the Parthenon Marbles to their home), and many galleries and art and exhibition centers have sprung up all over the city — the majority of them housed in former warehouses and factories. The numerous industrial-to-art conversions have been among the most pleasant surprises for the city, for they led almost immediately to the rebirth of formerly run down and all-but-abandoned neighborhoods.

If you are traveling to Athens soon, the Fire Service officials say they have a fire on the island of Samos contained. The fire had forced an evacuation of tourists from a beach resort.

Officials say four water-dropping helicopters helped some 200 firefighters and organized volunteers battle the fire Tuesday at Marathokampos, a western part of the island. Local authorities declared a state of emergency in the area.

It was the third major fire to hit the eastern Aegean Sea island in two weeks.
