The impressively noisy Aranmula Boat Race is held each year on the Pampa River on the last day of the Onam festival. The snake boats assemble on the water near the Parthasarathy Temple before the action begins.
Snake boats are each about 100 feet long and house four helmsmen, 100 oarsmen and 25 singers. They move in pairs to the rhythm of full-throated singing and shouting and the crowds are not afraid to lend their voices.
Festivities take place throughout the whole town as well as by the water.
