The Tamil calendar is based on the 60-year solar cycle. The Tamil New Year follows the vernal equinox in mid-April and is also the day when Lord Brahma (the creator of the world, according to Hindu mythology) started creation.
The day usually starts with viewing the kanni (auspicious items such as gold and silver jewellery, betel leaves, nuts, fruit and vegetables, flowers, raw rice and coconuts) at dawn, to bring good fortune throughout the year. This is followed by the ritual bath and a visit to the temple to pray for a prosperous year ahead. After which, the Panchangam is read.

Houses are decorated with a Kolam (design made with rice flour) at the entrance and doorways are decked with mango leaves.
