The Tarnetar Fair is a Gujarati celebration of life featuring folk dances and songs that takes place each year at the Temple of Shiva or Trinetreshwar (the three-eyed god), popularly known as Tarnetar temple.
Villagers from all over the state, dressed in their brilliant traditional costumes and exquisite jewellery, flock to Tarnetar. The magic of this festival is the impromptu musical activity as people suddenly break into folk songs and dances. Young and old, men, women and children sway in gay abandon to the soul-stirring rhythms of the Ras Garba and the Hudo Dance.
The Rasada, an amazing folk dance, is performed spontaneously by hundreds of women moving gracefully in a single circle, to the accompaniment of four drums and the jodja pava (double flute). The fair is also famous for the Tarnetar Chhatri (umbrellas), remarkable works of art intricately adorned with mirror work, splendid embroidery and lace.
